Universities: Student newspaper receives top honor
The Optimist was oneof 25 campus newspapers nationwide — and one of only two in Texas — to receive the organization’shighest award.
“The Optimist wascompeting against much larger publications and universities, so this awardreally shows that the work our students produce is at least equal to some ofthe largest and most well-known programs in the country,” said second-yeareditor Jonathan Smith, senior journalism major from Tyler, Texas.
The Pacemaker is thenewspaper’s first since 1983.
Professor consults onhistory film in Utah
YORK COLLEGE
Tim McNeese, anassociate professor of history at YorkCollege, York, Neb.,served as consulting historian for Risk Takers, History Makers, a proposedHistory Channel series.
McNeese participatedin a five-day shoot in September at CanyonlandsNational Park and Dead Horse State Park near Moab,Utah.
The series followsJohn Wesley Powell, who became the first person to lead an expedition down theuncharted portion of the Colorado River in1869. His voyage included passing through the Grand Canyon,a feat never before accomplished.
If the HistoryChannel picks up the series, it will air next spring.
