Texas member’s heroics earn high honors

SAN ANTONIO — Police officer Brandy Roell, a member of the San Pedro Church of Christ, is being honored for her heroism and sacrifice.

The recognition came both for her actions and for suffering gunshot wounds in the line of duty.

Roell was one of 13 public servants to receive the 2010 Star of Texas Award.

During recent ceremonies in Austin, Gov. Rick Perry recognized her “selfless service and injury in the line of duty.”

A week later, the Sons of the American Revolution also acknowledged her courage. The group bestowed its Medal for Heroism on her during a ceremony at the Petroleum Club in San Antonio.

Two years ago, Roell was barely a month out of the police academy when she and another officer were wounded trying to arrest a man on a domestic violence warrant. As they walked up a stairway, the gunman opened fire with an automatic rifle. The rounds penetrated a wall and struck both officers.
