Spotlight: Sundays with Friday
KANSAS CITY, MO — Ask Sarah Friday if children have changed in her 29 years of teaching, and her response is frank: “They’ve changed. I haven’t.”
Since 1977, Friday has taught the third- and fourth- grade Sunday Bible class at the Swope Parkway church. Most of the church’s 600 members have been in her class or sent their children there — or both.
Her students today have a lot of electronic distractions and don’t always respect their elders, but Friday said the curriculum remains the same — learning the books of the Bible, learning to behave during worship and learning to love Jesus.
“I believe that’s the talent God gave me,” she said.
Mark Pledger’s two children, now 29 and 24, fondly remember Friday’s class, and he suspects she’ll teach his grandchildren in a few years.
“She’ll hold your feet to fire, but she’ll love you to death,” he said.
