Spotlight: From Zambia to Tokyo


CHIPATA, ZAMBIA — Education has taken Phillip Phiri from Africa to Mississippi — and soon to Japan.

Phiri,a church member from Zambia, recently returned home after attending MagnoliaBible College, Kosciusko, Miss. Days before completing his bachelor’s degree,he was chosen as a finalist for a scholarship from Rotary International.

InJuly, Phiri will pursue a master’s degree in public administration with anemphasis in conflict resolution at International Christian University in Tokyo.

Hisministry experience played a role in the competitive selection process. Phiriorganized projects to inform Zambians about the dangers of HIV/AIDS. He alsolaunched the Zambia branch of New Life Behavior Ministries, a Texas-based,church-supported prison ministry.

Phirisaid his interest in peace and conflict resolution came from his father, aminister, and former South African president Nelson Mandela.
