Grandmother, grandson graduate on same day
ABILENE, TEXAS — When Jeremy McKissick graduated from Abilene Christian University on May 12, he was joined by someone he knows well: His grandmother.
Mary Lou McKissick, 73, a member of the Southern Hills church, wrapped up studies that began in 1992. She earned a bachelor’s degree in applied science with a 4.0 grade-point average, the Abilene Reporter-News reported.
While attending ACU, Mary Lou took a four-year break while she and Joe, 81, served as caregivers for her mother, who lived to be older than 100.
After her mother’s death, she resumed her studies.
Many fellow students came to know her simply as “Nana,” as she participated in study groups and homework assignments just like them.
Asked what took her so long to pursue her degree, she joked, “My husband told me that he would teach me all I needed to know. Finding that was not true, I began pursuit of greater knowledge!”
