ACU plans move to Division 1 athletics
ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Christian University has accepted an invitation from the Southland Conference to transition into NCAA Division 1 athletics.
This will be ACU’s 40th and final year as a member of NCAA Division 2 and the Lone Star Conference.
“We are pleased about this decision and are confident it will better align ACU with the broad academic goals and 21st century vision of our university,” ACU President Phil Schubert said.
ACU was one of five institutions that formed the Southland Conference in 1963, and it was a part of the league until 1972.
Founded in 1906 as Childers Classical Institute (then adopting the name Abilene Christian College in 1912), ACU has grown into one of the largest private universities in the Southwest with an enrollment of about 4,600.
