Voices only: Singing Latin in a stairwell
Welcome to Voices only, where we scour the internet to…
Welcome to Voices-only Wednesday, when we scour the Internet to bring you the best a cappella videos we can find.
I recently stumbled across a group on YouTube called Bee Geesus. (Clever, right?)
Well, I can tell by the way they use their voices that they’ve got talent — and a flair for African-themed music. Here they sing “Amazing Grace” to the tune of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” including plenty of “wimowehs.”
(This, of course, adds to the theory that you can sing the lyrics of “Amazing Grace” to pretty much any song. Hey, that would make a good theme for a future VOW. Please send me your a cappella “Amazing Grace” renditions.)
Interestingly enough, Bee Geesus is based in the Central European nation of Slovenia. Though not associated with Churches of Christ (that I can tell) they have a lot of gospel a cappella songs. In my many years with The Christian Chronicle, I’ve only written a handful of news briefs having anything to do with Slovenia, and I would love to know more about Churches of Christ there.
(“But wait, weren’t you just there?” some who follow my “Road Notes” posts might ask. No, that was Slovakia — a completely different Central European nation. Really enjoyed my brief visit there.)
Anyway, back to Bee Geesus. I absolutely LOVE this song, “Freedom is Coming (African Medley).” Watch the video until the end for a powerful illustration of spreading (and planting) the Gospel.
If you prefer, here’s a live version of “Freedom is Coming.”
The hits just keep coming. Here’s a song called “Inspired.”
