Abilene Christian University’s incoming provost, Robert L. Rhodes, spoke briefly to students at ACU’s chapel service and met with officials, students and others at a meet-and-greet following his brief remarks.
Rhodes, who will serve as the school’s chief academic officer, told students gathered in the university’s chapel service that he and his family were “appreciative” of the opportunity to help students and to work alongside the university’s faculty — and in a somewhat self-effacing moment, shared a private fear.
“I do want to say that there was one thing I was really concerned about,” he said. “But I found out it could work — I could make the wildcat symbol,” he joked, referring to a distinctive hand gesture popular at ACU athletic events in which fans make both a “W” and a “C” simultaneously with their fingers. Speaking briefly after the event, Rhodes said that the reception given to him and his family Monday “reconfirms” their decision to come to ACU.
