Tennessee church member Janelle Arthur makes ‘American Idol’ Top 20

Janelle Arthur, a member of the Oliver Springs Church of Christ in Tennesee, has advanced on “American Idol.”
In the above video, she thanks her family for its support.
“Y’all have just been there for me through everything,” she says. “Y’all have sent so many prayers up on my behalf.”
The Oak Ridger reports on the Top 20 finalist:

Oliver Springs resident Janelle Arthur continues to “wow” the judges on “American Idol.”
She advanced Wednesday night in the competition and will compete again this week, when Americans — and hopefully Janelle’s many East Tennessee fans — will get the chance to vote for her.
“Your voice is so raw and real. And there’s not an ounce of pretentiousness in your voice,” judge Mariah Carey told Janelle.
On Twitter, Janelle posted Wednesday: “As you saw tonight, I made the TOP 20 on American Idol!!!!! I AM SO BLOWN AWAY & THANKFUL.”

Although I hope this young lady will walk in God’s will regardless of how this situation works out, I would greatly discourage any Christian from being involved with “American Idol.” The name of the program alone is reason enough for a Christian not to participate, or for a Christian parent to not allow their child to be involved. When this program began about 11 years ago, I found it bothersome that Christians actually wanted to watch a program with such a name – something God outright commands His people to not associate with. The attraction of Christians to a program like this is a microcosm of how worldly minded people in the Church have become, possibly not even realizing it. The other issue here is that the entertainment industry is an ungodly world that Christians are taking a great spiritual risk by being involved. Even when parents allow their young children to get involved with the industry in innocent children’s programs, the result is often that this takes them into the industry as adolescents and adults and a very worldly life outside of Christ (e.g., Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake). I would wish for this young Christian sister’s sake, that her time on this program quickly end and that she and her parents look for a different route to go with her talents.

Yo! AI folks, I am not a follower of entertainment programs such as AI, but let me clarify that neither would I consider myself an avid fan of any media entertainment. While NOT “agin-it”, I simply choose to “get my jollies” in other ways. There is a spiritual similarity between _IDOL_ and _IDLE_. However, I am compelled to address some of the previous remarks. Some seem to embrace the notion that MY faith should be the STANDARD by which others live. We need a daily reminder that MY gifts, talents, interests, opportunities, resources… are as individually unique as MY FAITH. Remember, it is God who gives to each a measure of faith (Rom.12:2-4); we are HIS workmanship (Eph.2:10). As Kingdom-dwellers” we might spend our time best in mutual encouragement and focus on God’s glory!
