Spotlight: Lifetime of service

LOS ANGELES — As elder Charlie Runnels turned 90 on Aug. 2, the Culver Palms Church of Christ honored him for a lifetime of service.

Daughters of two fellow elders created decorations to carry out the Don Quixote Spanish theme with large flowers, fans and windmills.

Church members prepared enchiladas, refried beans and rice.

A film featured Runnels’ life, including contacts with various political and entertainment figures.

Runnels founded the Youth Citizenship Seminar at Pepperdine University, where he serves as chancellor emeritus. He has spent years bringing the Culver Palms church together by inviting and encouraging people to be an active part of it.
