Spotlight: LCU’s stem cell donor
LUBBOCK, Texas — Bobby Hooten, web content manager for Lubbock Christian University, was one of 240 students, faculty and staff who registered to be a blood stem cell and bone marrow donor last fall.
Hooten was matched to an older woman with a rare form of cancer. He traveled to a partner hospital of Delete Blood Cancer for a six-hour procedure to remove stem cells from his blood stream.
Hooten received injections of a protein that helps move stem cells into the blood stream. The injections cause flu-like symptoms.
“This might be someone’s only chance to live,” Hooten explained. “Even if it caused me a little bit of pain and illness, that’s nothing.”
