In a small Texas town, a Church of Christ becomes a hub for Harvey relief
LA GRANGE, Texas — Days after Hurricane Harvey, La Grange…
The Reed family, members of the Church of Christ in Champions, are safe and dry, thanks to fellow believers who rescued them from their flooded home.
Dwan Reed took this photo of her home as she rode in a canoe to higher ground. (PHOTO PROVIDED)“I tell my kids, ‘You can go to any country in the world and you find the people at a Church of Christ and they will help you,’” said Dwan Reed, who evacuated their home in the Houston suburb of Spring, Texas, with her husband, their 19-year-old son and their pets.
“Even here in the United States, I don’t care what happens to you if you stay in the church you are going to have family,” she said after the Sunday rescue.
The house had flooded before, Reed said, and though they knew Hurricane Harvey was coming, no one predicted that the rain would reach the record-breaking levels it reached Sunday.
Reed, however, knew they were in trouble when she woke up at 3 a.m. and saw the neighborhood filling with water — alarmingly fast. Already, a truck was struggling to make it down the street.
The family began moving their belongings to the second floor. Soon, water began slowly trickling into the house. It was slow at first, Reed said, but by 7:30 a.m. they knew it was time to leave.

About that time, friends and fellow church members began messaging Reed, asking how they could help. Several phone calls and messages later, the family had arranged for their evacuation.
The canoe, owned by members of another Houston-area Church of Christ, fought a strong current as it carried them to higher ground, where more church members were waiting to provide the family with a safe, dry place to stay.
Reed said her family does have flood insurance.
