Oklahoma Christian professor dies at 54
OKLAHOMA CITY — John Thompson, professor of history at Oklahoma Christian University and an elder at the Wilshire church in Oklahoma City, died Dec. 12. He was 54.
The Oklahoma Christian graduate taught at the university for 28 years, specializing in black history.
Chronic illness necessitated the amputation of both of Thompson’s feet in recent years. Through hospital stays and treatments, he continued to teach — sometimes from his hospital bed.
In 2006, students raised funds so that an elevator could be installed in the Davison American Heritage Building, where Thompson worked and taught. The next year, more money was raised to renovate the family’s home and make it handicap-accessible.
Survivors include his wife, Murrell, and three children, Jennifer, Johnathan and Jessica.
