Ohio Valley University alumni may order transcripts through Oklahoma Christian

Students from the defunct Ohio Valley University can finally get their transcripts, thanks to an agreement with Oklahoma Christian University.

The Vienna, W.Va., school closed permanently in December 2021 after years of financial struggles. Longstanding technology issues there and the legal complications of OVU’s bankruptcy prolonged the challenges of students and alumni who needed transcripts.

Karen Driskill, the Oklahoma Christian registrar, said about 5,000 transcripts have been received to date, including those of OVU students and some from Northeastern Christian Junior College, that Villanova, Pa., institution that merged with OVU in 1993.

“We got a laptop and an external hard drive and have been receiving boxes of legacy and older transcripts and are working to make sure they’re in the electronic upload,” Driskill said.

Ohio Valley University in Vienna, W.Va., hosts a college recruiting fair for its remaining students a few days after the Dec. 8, 2021, decision to close permanently.

About 50 requests were received and filled in the first week. The office is no longer keeping a count of requests, but Driskill estimates about 100 have been sent so far.

Driskill went to West Virginia before OVU closed and said she “felt a really good pull with the students, especially after being there and hearing their stories. I really personally wanted to help them.

“A lot of them have had a really rough time getting a job — you can’t get a job without a transcript,” the registrar explained. “I know the past registrar was really trying as best she could, but that was becoming more difficult every day.”

The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reported that a judge in November 2022 granted a motion allowing the receivership handling the property to release student transcripts. Earlier this fall, Oklahoma Christian announced plans to initiate registrar services for OVU students and alumni.

“A lot of them have had a really rough time getting a job — you can’t get a job without a transcript.”

John deSteiguer, Oklahoma Christian’s chancellor; Christine Merideth, its chief development officer; and Jeff Dimick, its chief data and analytics officer, brought the laptop, hard drive and other materials back to Oklahoma after a trip to the West Virginia campus. Dimick had worked at OVU earlier in his career, and Driskill credited his knowledge of the institution with easing the process.

Students and alumni reported having difficulty getting transcripts even before the school shut down, and complaints filed with the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission were among the issues that led the commission to revoke the institution’s authority to issue degrees.

Former president Michael Ross assured the commission at its Dec. 10, 2021, meeting that software was being installed on OVU servers that day, and he was cautiously optimistic they would be able to pull transcripts that afternoon to facilitate student transfers and teach-outs. That didn’t happen.

OVU alumni may request copies of transcripts by contacting OC’s registrar at oc.edu/registrar.
