The Cary News in North Carolina reports:
CARY — Forty years ago, five families met in a building on Chatham Street for church services. A year later, the congregation expanded to a 200-seat building on Maynard Road. And now the Cary Church of Christ fills a 600-plus seat auditorium at its Tryon Road campus.
More than a 180 families gathered Nov. 7 for a day-long celebration of the church’s humble beginnings and its landmark anniversary.
Jennifer Lowry was 6-years-old when the church was founded.
“I have nice memories of the first year,” she said. “The members did a lot of the work [building the Maynard Road church] themselves, and the kids had a lot of odd jobs to help out on the weekends.
“I had the privilege of growing up in a small congregation of what used to be a small town,” continued Lowry, whose parents and sister also still worship at the church. “About 25 of us have been here since the early years, and some of the people I was in youth group with now have children growing up in our congregation.”
