No. 28 NBA draft pick puts God No. 1
DALLAS, TEXAS — The Dallas Mavericks made Maurice Ager — a faithful member of the Holmes Road church, Lansing, Mich., during his four seasons at Michigan State — their top pick in the recent NBA draft. Holmes Road associate minister Todd Greer describes Ager, the overall No. 28 pick in the draft’s first round, as not only a great player but also “a young man who has his priorities in line.”
The 6-foot-5 Ager, who averaged about 19 points per game his senior season, is expected to compete for significant playing time in the Mavericks’ backcourt.
And his religious upbringing might help him with coach Avery Johnson, as both “know that having a hard edge and being spiritual aren’t mutually exclusive,” The Dallas Morning News reported.
“You can still be a Christian and still be tough,” Ager told the newspaper. “I play hard every day and don’t take anything on the court.”
