OKLAHOMA CITY — The Christian Chronicle mourns two losses in our family — Joe deSteiguer and Joyce McBride. Both died April 16.
DeSteiguer is the son of John and Darla deSteiguer. John deSteiguer is president of Oklahoma Christian University, which owns The Christian Chronicle . John deSteiguer serves on the Chronicle’s Board of Trustees.
The university reported on its website:
Our hearts are broken today as we have lost one of our beloved students and the son of our university president. We ask that you respect the privacy of his family at this time and lift the OC community up in prayer.
The student newspaper The Talon produced an online slide show and tribute story remembering Joe deSteiguer:
Joe was many things, but most of all he was loved.
Joe loved to travel. He once confided that he dreamed of writing for National Geographic. Joe especially loved Australia, where he visited twice on month-long mission campaigns.
Seniors Dakota Enriquez and Kelcy Nash traveled with Joe on his second trip to the country in May of last year. Nash first met Joe while preparing for the mission campaign.
“Australia was really special to Joe,” Nash said. “Since it was his second trip, they called him the boomerang child. He loved Australia and was really happy there.”
Missionary in Residence Kent Hartman introduced Joe to Australia. Hartman was a missionary to the country and often sent postcards while on visits back. Two recipients of those notes included Joe and Abby.
“We just kind of connected,” Hartman said. “He’s quite a bit like our son, so we kind of hit it off there a little bit.”
Joyce McBride is the wife of Bailey McBride, the Chronicle’s editor emeritus. She was a longtime supporter of our efforts to inform, inspire and unite Churches of Christ around the globe. She hosted countless Christmas parties for the staff in her home and was a reliable sounding board for story ideas.
A lifelong educator, she taught Bible class regularly at her home congregation, the Memorial Road Church of Christ in Oklahoma City. Almost every church member who grew up at Memorial Road spent time learning the books of the Bible and Psalm 23 in Joyce McBride’s class.
We’re blessed by the love Joyce McBride gave our campus and our children. Let this video bring a smile to your face. http://t.co/IiCWtzHLFN
