Member accused of taking $250,000 from church
POPLAR BLUFF, MO. — Vernon Curry, Highland Drive’s minister of two years, said Puckett’s duties included preparing the church’s books for the accountant. Highland Drive averages about 170 in attendance for Sunday morning worship.
Authorities allege that Puckett would make out checks to cash or to herself, then alter the payee on bank statements, substituting the name of a business or company to whom the church owed money. Curry said Puckett is no longer employed at Highland Drive and attends another congregation.
“We’re recovering,” Curry said of the congregation. “Our elders have prayed for her, and they’ve asked the church here to forgive her. We want everyone to know that.”
