Lipscomb’s basketball team shoots hoops, lends a hand in Dominican Republic
Here’s the schedule for the Lipscomb University men’s basketball team for the next few days:
Today: vs. Mauricio Baez at 6 p.m.
Friday: at Villa Durate, 9 a.m.; at San Carlos, 6 p.m.
Sunday: at San Pedro, 3:30 p.m.
Monday: at San Lazaro, 6 p.m.
“Exactly what league are they in?” you might ask. (And why are they playing college basketball in August?)
The Bisons traveled from Nashville, Tenn., to the Dominican Republic recently for an exhibition tour through Aug. 16. But they’ll be doing more than playing basketball. The trip is also a mission to help the underprivileged in this Caribbean nation, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
Coordinating the trip is SCORE International, a Chattanooga, Tenn.-based nonprofit that exposes people to short-term mission trip. A key focus for SCORE is members of college and high school sports teams who might not otherwise participate in a mission trip. In this video, David Conrady, national basketball director of SCORE discusses the nonprofit’s mission and Lipscomb’s trip.
In addition to playing basketball, the Bisons will distribute clothing and health kits to the needy in the Dominican Republic. Team members are posting updates on Lipscomb’s men’s basketball page and Twitter.
FeedbackThanks for bringing this to my current interest. I really love it when individuals take the time to help others out there.Karol CannuliSeptember, 13 2011
