Lipcomb, campus ministers mourn Matheny
LIPSCOMB UNIVERSITY, Nashville, Tenn. — Lipscomb University and campus ministers across the nation mourned the loss of Mike Matheny, who died Nov. 14 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer. He was 50.
Matheny graduated from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville with a degree in electrical engineering, but his heart for ministry led him to pursue graduate work in religion. He served as campus minister at Tennessee Tech while on staff at the Collegeside church.
Matheny was associate professor and chair of the undergraduate Bible department at Lipscomb. He was director of adult education at the Brentwood Hills church in Nashville.
Matheny was “an excellent teacher and a great listener,” said Jason Locke, a member of Matheny’s campus ministry in the late 1980s. Locke now serves as campus minister for the Morgantown, W.Va., church.
