Indian ministers set goal of 50 church plants
CHENNAI, India — Fifty new churches in 10 days — that’s the ambitious goal of ministers in this southeastern Indian city.
In January 2009 teams of Indian and American Christians will participate in an evangelistic campaign in communities near Chennai. Elders of the Simi church in Simi Valley, Calif., are providing oversight for the campaign, dubbed “50 Lampstands for Chennai,” with assistance from the Choolaimedu church in Chennai.
Teams from the 200-member Simi church first traveled to Chennai in 2005 to provide relief for survivors of the December 2004 tsunami. The groups began working with Indian ministers, including Paul Renganathan, and developed the idea for the campaign
Churches in California and Colorado have committed to send members. At press time, Indian ministers sought an additional 20 church members to participate, Renganathan said.
