Homeless man, Michigan members chat in Detroit park

Joshua Graves, left, and Andy Turner, right, from the Rochester, Mich., church visit with a homeless man whom Graves nicknamed “Professor Jack.” The congregation ministers to the homeless who live in and around Cass Park in Detroit. Members go to Cass Park once a month, cooking meals and providing the homeless with items such as clothes, hats and gloves, church member Lora Isenberg said. Professor Jack offered members “a humble but powerful class that could be titled ‘Life As I See It,’” said Graves, Rochester’s minister for young adults. “If you had the eyes to see and the ears to hear , it was quite the holy conversation,” Graves said. “There were no pews, sacraments or prayers — but God was oh, so present.”(Photo by Lucas del Castillo) Feb. 1, 2007
