Editorial: Help for old headlines

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”

Those words, from the first chapter of Ecclesiastes, might come to mind as you turn the pages of this month’s Christian Chronicle. At first glance, this appears to be an issue of old headlines.

The border crisis? That ended months ago, right?
And the doctor with Ebola? He’s healed.
Though the mainstream media have moved on to other issues — most recently, the terrible conflict in the Middle East — these stories haven’t gone away. We praise God for those who bring aid and hope — even after the television cameras leave.
‘We praise God for those who bring aid and hope — even after the television cameras leave.’
Ministries with ties to Churches of Christ, including Global Samaritan Resources, Healing Hands International and Christian Relief Fund, contribute to efforts on the Mexican border and in West Africa. Nonprofits outside our fellowship, including Samaritan’s Purse, provide relief for those displaced by Islamic extremists in the Middle East. Ebola survivor and church member Dr. Kent Brantly served — and was served by — Samaritan’s Purse.
Disaster relief is a years-long process. In New York and New Jersey, Churches of Christ continue to serve the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Multiple ministries and churches serve the people of the Philippines as they recover from last year’s devastating Typhoon Haiyan.

From God’s Word, we know that what has been will be again. May we be ever ready to serve.
