Harold’s Pit Bar-B-Q in Abilene, Texas closing, at least temporarily

The last time I visited Abilene Christian University in Texas, journalism faculty members Cheryl Bacon and Kenneth Pybus introduced me to Harold’s Pit Bar-B-Q.
Sadly, my first experience with Abilene’s favorite hole in the wall may have been my last.
The Abilene Reporter-News reports that Harold’s is closing, at least temporarily, much to the chagrin of the ACU family from near and far:

Near the door has been placed a small, hand-lettered sign that has inspired almost literal panic among fans of the family’s smoked meats, sweet sauce and hot water cornbread. The restaurant is closing, “temporarily,” the sign says.
After all the time the Christian family has spent at the cramped but comfortable eatery at 1305 Walnut, it’s time for a break, Harold Christian and his loved ones have said.
And as the days spiral toward the July 30 closure, every one of the Christian family admits that they’re tired and that they need some time to assess.

If ACU wants to increase enrollment, all they have to do is put Harold Christian in charge of the Bean. I don’t know what Abilene will do without Harold’s.

Not only will people miss the great BBQ but also Harold’s marvelous singing voice. Hope he can find a way to keep the tradition going.

I just moved to Abilene and now I learn that Harold’s is closing! What a loss!

I hope that the city of Abilene and/or ACU will do something to keep this landmark alive. It is my absolute favorite and I have so many fond memories of that place.
