Freed-Hardeman University cancels Cosby appearance
Christian university in Tennessee will feature author and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson at its fundraising dinner Dec. 5.
Freed-Hardeman University has canceled an appearance by comedian Bill Cosby at a Dec. 5 fundraising dinner.
In recent weeks, at least 16 women have publicly stated that Cosby, 77, sexually assaulted them. The allegations, some of which date back more than 30 years, “have overshadowed the FHU Benefit Dinner’s mission of helping students,” said university spokeswoman Dawn Bramblett.
Dr. Ben Carson a renowned neurosurgeon, author and political commentator, will speak to the estimated 2,800-plus attendees at the university’s 50th dinner. The 1,800-student university, located in Henderson, Tenn., is associated with Churches of Christ.
“I thank our board and administrative team, who have sought wisdom in carrying out this milestone celebration,” FHU President Joe Wiley said. “I appreciate the prayers and encouragement many have offered for those who have been problem solving and handling details behind the scenes.”
“Of course, we are grateful to Dr. Carson for adding this commitment to his busy calendar on short notice. More than 90 percent of our students receive financial aid, and the scholarships this event funds are a vital component of that aid.”
“As important as this event is to our students, we know that names we have seen in the media represent real people who will be affected long after FHU’s dinner has passed. Please join us in praying for healing and peace for those involved.”
