Former Freed-Hardeman University professor dies after contracting West Nile virus

As seen in the Jackson Sun:

Eugene Hibbett’s wife, Jackie, said Eugene was not the type of person who had any time to waste, and it is evident from the life he led.
Eugene Hibbett, who turned 80 on July 17, taught chemistry at Freed-Hardeman University for 39 years, and almost during that entire span, when he wasn’t teaching, he was preaching at Churches of Christ in West Tennessee and North Mississippi, Jackie Hibbett said.

Eugene Hibbett died on Saturday after suffering from encephalopathy because of the West Nile virus, Jackie Hibbett said.
She said her late husband’s passion was science.

Having attended FHU from 1961-1964, I remember brother Hibbett. God bless the work of this man of God and his family.

Dr. Hibbett was my chemistry professor during the 1965-66 school year. He was a great teacher and wanted his students to learn to the point that he would have extra study sessions with those of us who wanted and needed help. I was impressed with his Christian attitude and know he will be missed, but heaven is rejoicing over his victory in Jesus.

A true southern gentleman with a great attitude and a sense of humor to go along with great intelligence and lots of common sense.

    Dear Jackie,
Just want you to know my prayers go out for you in your loss. Having lost my husband, Johnny Anders,in March, I can certainly understand what you are going through. I was also born July 17,which was interesting. I feel quite sure that Dr Hibbett’s wonderful works will follow him. May God strengthen you in this great loss. Love in Christ, Jo Anders
