The Christian Chronicle's comprehensive coverage of the global COVID-19 pandemic…
For the second year in a row, the Religion News Association’s national awards were presented in virtual fashion Thursday night because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bobby Ross Jr., The Christian Chronicle’s editor-in-chief, received third place for reporting at magazines and non-daily newspapers. Emma Green of The Atlantic won first place, while John Beck of Moment Magazine earned second place.
“The judges praise Ross for writing with both authority and compassion,” RNA contest chairman Jeff Diamant said.
Ross’ entry portfolio included these stories:
Earlier, five Christian Chronicle journalists, including Ross, were named as finalists in the 2021 RNA Awards for Religion Reporting Excellence. The awards recognize top journalism in secular and religious publications.
The other Chronicle finalists:
• Bobby Ross Jr., Cheryl Mann Bacon, Chellie Ison and Hamil Harris, for the Gerald A. Renner Award for Excellence in Religion Enterprise Reporting. That team covered the faith response to George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis police custody last year, producing a series of videos and stories.
• Erik Tryggestad, for Excellence in Magazine and Non-Daily Newspaper Religion Reporting. Tryggestad’s stories ranged from the “African ‘Shark Tank'” in Ghana to the difficulty Black churches face acquiring loans to Christian care homes’ struggle during the “long, lonely lockdown.”
