The excitement was high Monday morning at Davis Elementary School in Montgomery, Ala., as athletes from Faulkner University lined up to welcome students back for their first day.
Faulkner University’s mascot, Baldwin welcomes Davis Elementary students back to school on Monday.
“We love to do this,” said Dr. Jean-Noel Thompson, Vice President of Student Services at Faulkner, a 3,200-student school associated with Churches of Christ.
About 300 of Faulkner’s athletes — cheerleaders the golf team and members of the football, soccer, basketball and volleyball teams — and the Eagles’ mascot, Baldwin, lined the halls and sidewalks to welcome students with high-fives, claps and cheers.

“It’s so neat to see the motivation and the enthusiasm on the kids’ faces and of the parents,” Thompson said. “Seeing our athletes out here is a blessing and it gets everyone excited for who we are and what Faulkner stands for.”
This is the third year Faulkner has offered the surprise welcome to Davis students, parents and teachers.
Aleysia Alves, Davis’ principal, said the event is a great way to bring positive energy into the school.
“We thank Faulkner so much for the consistency and for not only making sure our student feel welcome, but our staff as well,” Alves said. “I’m just so grateful.”
