Churches pray for Brazil missionaries’ preemie twins
Christians in Brazil and the U.S. are praying for twin boys Graham and Gibson Gotcher. Church members also are filling the Facebook pages of the twins’ parents — Wes and Carrie Gotcher — with messages of support.
The Gotchers are part of a mission team in Niteroi, Brazil, a city of half a million souls located just across the bay from Rio de Janeiro. Carrie delivered the twins in Brazil at 28 weeks — nearly three months ahead of schedule. The boys weighed about two and a half pounds each.
On. Oct. 11 Gibson had surgery to close the gap between his aorta and the pulmonary artery.
“We had around 15 people up at the hospital praying for Gibson during his surgery, and we really felt at peace,” Wes wrote in a blog post. “Yesterday I was reading Phillipians to Gibson … . I was so comforted when I read ‘The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. The peace of God that transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.'”
“I’ll admit that I’ve been anxious at several different points in this past seven days,” Wes said. “I’ve also experienced some peace in knowing that I am as powerless as my two boys to physically help them and that we are all totally dependent on God.”
In another blog post, Carrie thanked Christians on both continents for their prayers.
“Thank you for the wonderful love and prayers you all have poured out over Graham and Gibson and over us,” she said. “We truly feel strengthened by knowing how many of you are lifting up our precious little men to the Father.”
Here’s a video of the twins. (Get out your tissues.)

It was 19 years ago that Glover Shipp wrote of our story in the Chronicle and thanking Christians everywhere for their prayers when our son, Matthew died of Spinal Meningitis. There is nothing more comforting to a missionary family knowing that their Spiritual family is praying for them and with them. God bless Carrie and Wes and their babies.Melody HuffmanOctober, 18 2010
