In Chicago, church mourns a slain judge
CHICAGO — When he wasn’t presiding on the bench, Raymond…
One man is in custody and a security guard is recovering after a shooting at a Chicago-area church.
On Wednesday night, a group gathered for Bible study at the Maypole Avenue Church of Christ in Chicago. Police say it was during that meeting time that a gunman entered the church building and “announced a robbery.”
A security guard for the congregation exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Both were injured and transported to area hospitals.
Church leaders released a statement stating, “We are shocked and saddened at the tragic events.”
Church leaders went on to say, “What a commentary it is that you have to have armed security to worship the Lord.”
It is unknown why the man chose the church as his target. However, church leaders say they pray not only for their brother in Christ, the security guard who was injured, but also for the suspect.
“We will be diligent and not deterred; prayerful and not vengeful, knowing the God we serve,” they said.
Chicago police say the suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Kenneth Baines. Baines has been charged with several felonies, including aggravated battery and attempted robbery with a firearm.
