Church of Christ becomes department store during ‘Caring by Sharing’ clothing giveaway

Friendly Avenue Church of Christ in Greensboro, N.C., doubled as a department store on Aug. 6.

And everything was free.

New school uniforms, underwear and socks in a variety of colors and sizes.

“Some still have the tags on them,” said Eleanor Maple, who is among a group of members who have met at the church twice a week since spring to sift through clothing that she helped fold and group on tables.

The annual giveaway draws about 1,000 people every year.

Much of the clothing looks new. In fact, some of it has never been worn.

The hope is that the people who show up really need the help — and aren’t just there for free stuff.
