Among ashes, cross remains

MBALE, Uganda — Sparks from an electrical fuse box started a fire in the home of Phillip and Laura Shero, members of a mission team in this East African country since 1998.
“The fire raged until the entire roof collapsed into our house,” Phillip Shero said. “Couches, beds, even appliances like coffee makers were reduced to dust and ashes.”
Church members rallied to help the missionaries and their three children — Malachi, Israel and Annalise. The family posted a wish list on Amazon.com and supporters launched a Facebook group to raise awareness.
The Sheros received new beds for the children. A piece of art the couple bought on their honeymoon was replaced, free of charge, by the artist’s gallery.
The fire destroyed everything in the family’s living room except a metal cross that hung on the wall.
“The only permanence in this world is found in Christ and the message of his cross,” Phillip Shero said. “This remains true, no matter what tragedy assaults us, even if our world — literally — falls down around us.”
