After 22 tries, Freed-Hardeman’s Lady Lions are NAIA national basketball champions

'It’s a surreal awesome feeling,' longtime coach Dale Neal says. 'It’s going take a while for it to all soak in.'

Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., is celebrating its first NAIA women’s basketball national championship.

After 21 trips to the national tournament without claiming the title, FHU’s Lady Lions defeated the Westmont College Warriors of Santa Barbara, Calif., in Tuesday night’s final in Billings, Mont.

The winning score: 76-64.

“I told the girls I think I might cry. It’s just awesome. ,” said Dale Neal, FHU’s longtime head coach and an inductee last week into the NAIA Hall of Fame. “It’s a surreal awesome feeling. It’s going take a while for it to all soak in.”
