A year of jubilee

The Pasir Panjang Church of Christ declared its 50th anniversary a “year of jubilee.” The church followed the example from Leviticus, when God called his people to “proclaim liberty throughout all the land” every half-century.

More than 800 Christians gathered for a celebration on Oct. 19, 2014.

The church also collected more than $150,000 for missions.

Church leaders asked for testimonials from Christians in the congregation and throughout Southeast Asia.

“I started regular worship at Pasir Panjang after I witnessed the strong faith of my husband, Roland. I could really feel that God was
present during worship.

“Our daughter’s question, ‘Mum, dad, why aren’t we attending Bible class on Sundays?’ started our regular Bible class attendance.

“We were blessed and filled with joy over the years as our three children were baptized.”

— Lynda Wee, Pasir Panjang member

“The Pasir Panjang congregation is a model for mission churches, starting with Brother A.L. Harbin selecting Henry Kong as the local preacher.

“(Kong) didn’t make the mistake of selecting elders before they were prepared and ready. Today they are the servant leaders that God intended rather than administrators.”

— Winston Bolt, longtime missionary to Indonesia and founder of Batam Bible College
“We at the Northwest congregation in Singapore are always grateful to Pasir Panjang for their assistance when we first started. You helped us with song books, tracts and even brother Henry Kong preached one Sunday morning. We thank God for Pasir Panjang, for her work especially in ministering to the deaf and the foreigners in Singapore.”

— Soon Choon Lin, minister, Northwest Church of Christ in Singapore
“Pasir Panjang provided a shelter for us in this foreign land — to know more our fellow Christians, to share our laughter and tears.

“For me, to live is not all about ‘work and spend and enjoy’ … It is how much I can do to touch lives and how to be a blessing to others.

“God is shaping me here. This is not my final destination.”

— Clarita Simon, Pasir Panjang church member, originally from the Philippines.

“I attended my first Pasir Panjang camp in 2009. I was thrilled to see an efficient and self-sufficient congregation outside the western world.

“I was touched by the concern, care, commitment and the great hospitality of the members. It doesn’t matter whether you are small or big, rich or poor, you will be embraced with the same love.”

— Joel Madiki, minister in southern India who has partnered with Pasir Panjang since 2010.
“You have rooted us and guided us spiritually by assigning us to lead the Filipino Bible class, thus giving us no escape from our Christian obligation.

“When we came back to the Philippines, we never imagined that all the experiences and lessons we learned from Singapore brethren would be applied right in our own congregation.”

— Sonny and Gina Catalan, church workers in the Philippines
“Pasir Panjang and Missions Resource Network are in partnership for Kingdom growth in Asia.

“We call them a Global Launch Site partner. We work together in their nine mission points, equipping leaders to be disciple makers.

“Some of my best partners in the Gospel and my dearest friends in the world are members at the Pasir Panjang Church of Christ.”

— Mark Hooper, director of Asia missions for Missions Resource Network (mrnet.org)

“It was a time of spiritual growth when I was at Pasir Panjang Church of Christ. I have learned so much from brothers and sisters there in both the English and Chinese congregations.

“It is a blessing to know that together as God’s family we are fighting this good fight.”

— Peter Zhu, former student at Sunset International Bible Institute in Singapore, now a minister in China.
